THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT. Matt. 5, 6, 7 (32)

Key: SCHAFF: “When the Lord open his mouth, we should open our ears and hearts”

GOOD WORKS WITHOUT OSTENTATION. Matt. 6:5-15 … Prayers …9

  1. Matt. 6:13 “And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” continues.
    1. “…But deliver us from evil or the evil one” This is not a distinct petition from the foregoing, but further unfolds and separately states something involved therein. The omission of this in Lk. 11:4, does not make the prayer to loose its principal thought.
    2. ‘The evil one’ Matt. 6:13 as in Mat. 5:37. The same expression means Satan in Matt. 13:19, 38, Eph. 6:16, 1Jn. 2:13, 14; 3:12; 5:19. It also means evil in Lk. 6:45, Rom. 12:9, 1Thess. 5:22.
    3. Satan is the evil one and he is the tempter. The new testament familiarly associates evil with the evil one, as its leading embodiment and central director. Jn. 8:44, Act. 5:3, Jn. 13:27
      1. Sin was first found in Him. Ez. 28:15.
      2. He entered the serpent and beguile Eve by subtlety, tempting man to sin. Gen. 3:1-6, 1Tim. 2:13-15, 2Cor. 11:3
      3. He is the God of this world 2Cor. 4:4, the prince of this world Lk. 4:6, Jn. 12:31, the prince of the powers of the air Eph. 2:2-3, the tempter Matt. 4:3, the enemy Matt. 13:39, the wicked one 1Jn. 5:18, Matt. 13:19, 38 and the accuser of our brethren Rev. 12:10. The whole idea is for God to deliver us from the evil one, who is the tempter.
  2. We can appreciate this prayer now after the the work of redemption has been completed by Christ. “God’s name has been sanctified: his reign is come; his will comes to pass, He has blotted out our sin, and he has delivered us from Satan.” Satan is now a prisioner. Jn. 12:31-33, Ps. 18:40-41, Col. 1:12-13.
    1. Man as believers in Christ now has a legal position in Christ Eph. 1:3, 5; Eph. 2:5-6, 2Cor. 5:17, Col. 2:10 with a new status.
      1. Has authority over ALL the powers of the enemy. Lk. 10:19, Is. 8:12-16, 18 Job. 22:28, Is. 45:11.
      2. Authority over Satan. Rom. 16:20, Ps. 91:13, Eph. 1:19-22
      3. Authority as Christ’s ambassadors 2Cor. 5:19-20, Jn. 17:18.
      4. Authority as joint heirs. Rom. 8:16-17, 29-32, Gal. 4:1-7.
  3. “For thine is the kingdom, and power…” This doxology is said to be spurious by all Bible scholars. Most translators have no prove to include it. We cannot cling to something not really in the Bible.
  4. Matt. 6:14-15. “If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly father will forgive you…” “This alone of all the topics in this prayer is taken up the second time, and amplified by stating both positively and negatively, ought to impress upon us very deeply the importance of forgiveness if we wish to be forgiven”-Broadus John A.
