GOOD WORKS WITHOUT OSTENTATION. Matt. 6:5-15 … Prayers …5

Matt. 6:9-13, “The Lord’s Prayer” as it is commonly called is so rich and sweet, and because the Saviour expressly gave it, on two occasions, Matt. 6:9-13 and Lk. 11:2-4 as a model of praying. “It cannot be maintained that he made it our duty to repeat this prayer whenever we pray, or to use these precise words from beginning to the end whenever we feel moved to adopt the prayer… The prayer contains no allusion to the meditation of Christ, says nothing about asking in His name, for which the disciples were not yet prepared Jn. 16:23, like many other portions of scriptures, it was especially adopted to the precise times in which it was spoken, and the interpretation and applications of it must be made accordingly”- Broadus, John A.

  1. Matt. 6:10 “Your kingdom come.” Broadus John A. Says “Of the three words, Kingship, reign, and kingdom in which the Greek word here employed is equivalent, it would be best…to use the second the term reign.” “The Messaianic reign which all devolt Jews were expecting Matt. 15:43, Lk. 23:51 and which John and Jesus had proclaimed as now near and at hand. Matt. 3:2; 4:17”
    1. This prayer covers from the beginning of His reign which is Christ in you, Lk. 17:20-21, Col. 1:26-27 to the consummation, the complete establishment of His reign and His glorious triumph Rev. 11:15 “The reign…is sure…for no power can ever frustrate His purpose” Stanford.
    2. Ps. 2:8, Eph. 3:14-15, Act. 4:24-30, 2Thess. 3:1-2, 1Tim. 2:1-4. “To pray for Christ’s kingdom is to pray for the conversion of sinners and the edification…of disciples. It is for the evangelization of the Gentiles and the restoration of the Jews. …The fall of Antichrist, and that idols should perish under the whole heaven…” Williams
  2. Matt. 6:10 “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” Theological writers distinguish three senses of the term will:
    1. God’s will of purpose always comes to pass, in heaven, earth, and hell.
    2. God’s will of desire does not yet come to pass on earth as it does in heaven.
      1. He wished Jesrusalem be saved, Lk. 13:34 today it is in ruins.
      2. He does not wish that any should perish…2Pet. 3:9, and he wishes all men be saved 1Tim. 2:4, yet men are still being held captive by Satan. 2Cor. 4:4
      3. God’s will of command. Ps. 40:8 “I delight to do your will O my God”, “My food is to do the will of him that sent me” Jn. 4:34 “whosoever shall do the will of my father who is in heaven, he is my brother, and my sister, and my mother” Matt. 12:50. It is fulfilling one’s destiny. Eph. 1:3-6.
    3. “Thy will be done ‘in me’ or ‘in us’ but every where on earth, so that error may be destroyed, and truth be planted, and all wickedness be cast out, and virtue return…” Chrys.
    4. The whole idea of intercession is “praying on behalf of others, under the power and direction of the Holy Spirit, knowing there will be divine result.
