AT THE END OF JESUS’ SERMON. Matt. 7:28-29. Part 1
They were astonished at his doctrine. “You would wonder why, in this discourse, Jesus has not spoken more clearly concerning his own person. But (1) he has so excellently set forth the teaching itself, that they would thence form an estimate of the excellence teacher. (2) His person was now sufficiently manifest. (3) In the discourse itself, he sufficiently intimates who he is, viz, ‘the coming one’ ‘the Son of God’ ‘the Judge of all.”- Bengel
- Matt. 7:28-29 “And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes”
- ‘For he taught them as having authority’ Heb. 1:1-3. God has been speaking through men and teachers who depend on the authority of Moses, “even Moses, in whom you trust” Jn. 5:45-47, now God speaks through the son, the divine authority. Jn. 7:15-24. Hear him:
- I am the bread of life. Jn. 6:48-58
- The resurrection and life. Jn. 11:25-26; 5:24-29; 8:51-58.
- Is. 33:22 “The Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us”
- “Christ Jesus whom God has made unto us wisdom” 1Cor. 1:30. “The teachings commend themselves to us as containing the highest of human wisdom- surpassing ancient sages and modern philosophers” A greater than Solomon is here Matt. 12:42, 1Kg. 10:1-8, 23-24, Pro. 8:1-6, 12-35.. Solomon built a house for him, but the most high does not dwell in temples made with hand. Act. 7:47-48.
- ‘The Lord is our Lawgiver’ he has written the law in our hearts on the table of flesh, and not on the table of stone. 2Cor. 3:3, 7-13, Heb. 8:7-13. He lives in us, walk in us, He is our God and we are his people.. 2Cor. 6:16, Jn. 14:21, 23.
