AT THE END OF JESUS’ SERMON. Matt. 7:28-29. Part 1
Matthew, the Evangelist, concluded his writing as to the effect of this great discourse on the people. “It was an excellent sermon and it is probable that he said more than is here recorded and doubtless the delivery of it from the mouth of him, into whose lips grace was poured (Ps. 45:2), did mightily set it forth” Mathew Henry.
- Matt. 7:28-29 “And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes”
a. “These sayings’ that is the whole discourse. “We should read it as addressed to ourselves. Imagine that you stand amid the crowd and listen, and ever and anon his mild eye falls upon you, Hear him telling you:” Broadus John A.
I. Who are the happy, fortunate, and blessed, to be envied under his reign, and how great, if you are one of his? To experience of joy and hope, the deepest form of happiness, which may include earthly prosperity, pleasure and laughter. They are precisely the persons who possess and enjoy the riches, dignities, and priviledges of Messiach’s reign Jas. 2:5, 2Cor. 8:9. The priviledges already belong to them, and shall henceforth be enjoyed by them. Matt. 5:1-12, compare. Lk. 6:24
II. That your responsibility is to salt: preserve mankind from moral corruption and ruin, add flavour to the world, save life from being stale and flat. Light, expose shoddiness and unworthiness of the world. Eph. 5:11. To display what human existence must be, and avoid dark ways. Eph. 5:3-10.
III. That serving God and trusting is care, you need not be anxious, that is shun painful or apprehensive uneasiness of mind over an impending or anticipated ill, fearful concern or interest about the things of this life
IV. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” That is, seek to be made righteous by God, by having our sin placed on Christ and judged in Him. Is. 53:6, 12, 2Cor. 5:21, become God’s righteouness Ro. 3:24-26; 4:25, and have righteousness as your armour. Is. 11:5, Job. 29:14, Is. 61:10, 2Cor. 6:7.
V. Those who neglect these injunctions will have the following as stated in Ps 109:6-20: “Evil person will turn against them, and accuser will stand at his right hand, his sins, the sin of his father and mother will always stand before the Lord, never to be blotted out.” What will be your reaction?
