THE JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS…2 Matt. 25:31–46

Eternal of everlasting fire, ‘the fire is not quenched’ Mk. 9:48, ‘the Gehenna of fire’ Matt. 5:22, ‘the furnace of fire’ Matt.13:42, 50. Broadus John A says, “Whether eternal punishment involves any physical reality corresponding to fire, we know not; there will be something as bad as fire, doubtless worse, for no earthly image can adequate.”

  1. Matt. 25:41  “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels”
  2. ‘Everlasting fire.’ There are objections to the Lord’s language.
  3. That the Jews in our Lord’s days did not believe Gehenna to be a place of eternal punishment. “The Talmudic passages quoted in Surenh. Mshna, Vol. 2.. p. 314. These shows that the great Jewish schools about the time of our lord both believes in Gehenna as a place of perpetual punishment for some persons.” Broadus John A.
  4. The metaphysical objection, that suffering is necessarily destructive, and the sufferer must later cease to exist. In Mk. 9:49 ‘Every one shall be salted with fire’. Fire is destructive, but this unquenchable fire will act like salt, preserving instead of destroying
  5. The moral argument, some says is not consistent with the goodness of God. God is angry with the wicked very day Ps. 7:11 and all nations who reject salvation plan of God will be turn to hell Ps. 9:17; 11:6. We should all remember that the whole purpose of redemption through Christ is to satisfy the demand of justice. Jesus Chris being our substitute in all ways Is. 53:1-12, 2Cor. 5:21, took the cup of fury of the anger of God from us and drank it Is. 51;22, and went to hell to be judged. Ps. 88:4-12, Matt. 12:40, Ps. 16;10
  6. ‘Prepared for the devil and his angels’
  7. The kingdom was prepared for you (v. 34), it is not an eternal fire You were chosen for adoption into sonship in Christ before the foundation of the world. Eph. 1:4-5. Remember we shall judge angels. 1Cor. 6:3, Rev. 12:10
  8. The devil and the fallen angels were chosen to perish. Jud. 6-7, 2Pet. 2:4.
