THE JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS…1 Matt. 25:31–46

The Lord Jesus Christ  here concludes the answers to the questions asked by the disciples Matt. 24:3, Mk. 13:3-4, Lk. 21:7 on these things, that is,  the Temple and the City, the coming of Christ as King, which to them will be the consummation and termination of the present age. The Messiah would bring ‘the end of the world’, that is, the ‘close of this age’ and introduce the coming age, the age of the Kingdom. The judgment of the nations by the King will terminate this age and usher in a new age of the kingdom of the Messiah on the throne of David. The passage obviously divides itself into v. 31-33, 34-40, 41-45, and 46.

  1. Matt. 25:31. “When the son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory”
  2. ‘The son of man’ the Messiah as often in this discourse. Matt. 24:27, 30, 37, 39, 44. He has long encouraged and revealed himself to his disciples as the Messiah
  3. ‘Shall come in glory’ Matt. 16:27; 24:30-31,Rev. 19:11-14 “And I saw heaven opened and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True…” Ps. 50:3-6, Jude 1: 14-15, 2Thess. 1:6-9, Dan. 2:44-45; 7:13-14. In Act. 1:6-8, this same Jesus you saw going to heaven will return in like manner. John said all eyes will see Him Rev. 1:7.
  4. ‘All his holy angels with him’ Rev. 19:14, Ps. 50: 4-5, Jude. 14-15 Zech. 14:4. “The lord of Hosts, He is the king of glory” Ps. 24:10. The “hosts” are heavenly. The name gathers into itself the idea of all divine or heavenly power as available for the need of God’s people. Gen. 32:1-2, Is. 6:1-5, Lk. 2:13-15, 1kg. 22:19.
  5. The host of angelic army and all the redeemed, Christ’s army (2Tim. 2:3-5) now clothed in linen, white and clean- garment of salvation and righteousness. Is. 61:10, Rev. 19:7-9; 3:5a; 4:4; 7:9, 14-17.
  6. ‘He sit upon the throne of His glory’ Zech. 14:9, Matt. 19:2, this verse also refers to the new age.
  7. Matt. 25:32-33 “And there shall be gathered all nations and he shall separate them one from another as a shepherd divide his sheep from the goat…the sheep on his right hand, but the goat on the left.”
  8. All nations as in Zeck. 14:4, Ps. 96;13, 98:9.
  9. ‘Shall separate like a shepherd Ez. 34:17-22. “Separation of the righteous and the wicked. A necessary separation; necessary to the vindication of God’s justice; necessary to the blessedness of the righteous; necessary for the punishment of the wicked”  Broadus John A. It continues.
