THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION …1. Matt. 24:15, Dan. 9:27.
The prophecy of Daniel 9:24-27 was given when Israel was in captivity, 9:1-2 and the fulfilment was to begin from the rebuilding of Jerusalem in “troublous times”. “Artaxerxes in his seventh year, B.C 444 (Hales, Jahn), 446 (AV), 454 (Ussher, Hengstenberg), gave permission for the rebuilding of the city, that is, Jerusalem Neh. 2:1-8, Ezr. 7:7” –C. I> Scofield. The destruction of the temple was to be fulfilled after the cutting off of the Messiah. “The prince that shall come” of verse 26, whose people (Rome) destroyed the temple in A.D 70 will make a covenant with the Jews for one week=7years Dan 9:27.
- Matt. 24:15 “When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken by Daniel the prophet, stand in the Holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand)
- The word “desolation” in the book of Daniel is spoken of seven times:
- of the sanctuary, 9:17 when the Jews were in exile in Daniel days and the sanctuary was desolate
- Generally of the land being desolate in Daniel’s times 9:18.
- of the sanctuary, Dan. 8:13; (IV) 11:31; (V) 12:11-12, was fulfilled by Antiochus 167 B.C The “little horn” of Dan. 8:9-14, 23-26; 11:21-35. According to Holman Christian Study Bible- “This one emerged out of the four kingdoms that divided the Greek Empire. This one was Antiochus IV (175-163 B.C.), ruler of Seleucid dynasty, who conquered surrounding areas to the south and to the east but dominated the beautiful land of Israel. He brutally trampled and persecuted the Jewish people from 170-164 B.C. …presented himself as the Prince of the Host, God Himself (called the prince of princes in Dan. 8:25), stopping daily sacrifices and defiling the holy temple (His Sanctuary) in Jerusalem (167 B.C.) In Dan. 8:13, 14 an Angel announced that Antiochus’s defilement of Israel would last only 2,300 evenings and mornings, until the temple was rededicated by Judas Maccabeus in 164 B.C. the event is still celebrated by Jewish people today during the festival of Chanukah (Eng. “Dedication” see Jn. 10:22-23” This is not the same as little horn of Dan. 7:8-9.
- Dan. 9:26 desolation of the sanctuary after the ‘cutting off’ of the Messiah which was fulfilled in A.D. 70.
- Dan. 9:27, of the sanctuary by the Beast Matt. 24:15, 2Thess. 2:3, 8-12, Rev. 13:14-15; 11:1-2 this is the abomination of desolation of the future predicted by Christ. It continues.
