THE PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINGS.….2 Matt.25:1-13

The bridegroom tarried, they slumbered, and then slept. This is from one carelessness to another. “Those that allow themselves in slumbering, will scarcely keep themselves from sleeping therefore dread the beginning of spiritual decays ‘Venienti occurite morbo’—Attend to the first symptoms of disease,” M. Henry

  1. Matt. 25:6 “And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him”
  2.  “In His first coming, he was thought to be delayed by those who waited for the consolation of Israel Lk. 2:25 yet in the fullness of time Gal. 4:4 he came so his second coming, though long deferred, is not forgotten his enemies shall find, to their cost, that forbearance is no acquittal 1Pet. 3:20, 2Pet. 3:3-9 and his friends shall find, to their comfort, that the vision is for an appointed time, and at the end it shall speak, and not lie Habb. 2:3. The year of the redeemed is fixed, and it will come.” M. Henry
  3. Death often comes at our midnight Lk. 12:20, when we least expect., ‘thy soul is required this night’ Israel was delivered at midnight Ex. 12:29. Christ is coming when we least expect him, and that will be a midnight 1Thess. 5:2.
  4. We as believers, must go forth to meet him. “When he come at death, we must go forth out of the body 2Cor. 5:8, out of the world, to meet him with affections and working of soul suitable to the discoveries we then expect him to make of himself.” M. Henry. Similarly, we will go forth to meet him with a new body at his coming. 1Cor. 15:50-54, 1Thess. 4:16-17.
  5. Matt. 25:7 “Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps” The best prepared, must get themselves actually ready that they may be at peace 1Pet. 3:14, found doing what they should do Matt. 24:46, and not found naked 2Cor. 5:3.
  6. Matt. 25:8. “And the foolish said unto the wise. Give us of your oil; for our lamps are out.”
  7. Their lamps are out. Job. 18:5-6; 21:17; 8:13-14. Believers’ walk daily with God’s lamp in them, this lamp was lightened when we were made alive in Christ. Ps. 18:28, and brightens as we walk with Christ Jn. 5:35, Dan. 3:3, Pro. 4:8; 13:9.
  8. They wanted oil. They suddenly found out that they don’t have the necessary things to make their lamp shine like others. It was too late for them to now ask for oil. They could have done that earlier. They were not well prepared. Lk. 8:18; 12:35, Heb. 4:1. It continues.
