THE EPISTLE OF PAUL THE APOSTLE TO THE HEBREWS…7

Heb. 1:1–14. —the Son of God, greater than the Angels—Who, having completed redemption, sits Enthroned at God’s Right Hand continues.

“He was not only above all things in condition, but before all things in existence; and therefore, must be God, and self-existent. He laid the foundations of the earth, did not only introduce new forms into pre-existent matter, but made out of nothing the foundations of the earth, the first principles of things; he not only founded the earth, but the heavens too are the work of his hands, both the habitation and the inhabitants, the hosts of heaven, the angels themselves; and therefore he must needs be infinitely superior to them.” M. Henry ‘The heavens are the works of thine hands’ De. 4:19, Ps. 8:3, 4; 19:1, Is. 64:8.

  1. They shall perish; Is. 34:4; 65:17, 2Pet. 3:7–10, Re. 20:11; 21:1. “This world is mutable, all created nature is so; this world has passed through many changes, and shall pass through more; all these changes are by the permission and under the direction of Christ, who made the world (v. 11, 12):
  2. They all shall wax old as doth a garment; Is. 50:9; 51:6, 8. And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: This our visible world (both the earth and visible heavens) is growing old. Not only men and beasts and trees grow old, but this world itself grows old, and is hastening to its dissolution; it changes like a garment, has lost much of its beauty.” M. Henry. “And they all shall wax old as doth a garment, and as a vesture shalt Thou fold them up, and they shall be changed” (vv. 11, 12). This emphasizes the mutability of the creature. Two resemblances are employed: first the earth may be said to “wax old as doth a garment” in that it is not to last forever, but is appointed to an end: see 2 Peter 3:10. The longer, therefore, it has continued, the nearer it approaches to that end; as a garment, the longer it is worn, the nearer it is to its end. May not the increasing number of earthquakes evidence that “old age” is fast coming upon it? Second, the heavens may be said to be “folded up as a vesture,” because Scripture declares “the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll” (Isa. 34:4).” “Thou shall fold them up.” This intimates Christ’s absolute control over all creation. He that made all hath an absolute power to preserve, alter, and destroy all, as it pleaseth Him. He is the Potter, we are but the clay, to be molded as He will. Pink Arthr W
  3. “The apostle John, saw “a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away” (Rev. 21:1). But Christ “remaineth.” but thou remainest; Ps. 10:16; 29:10; 90:2, Is. 41:4; 44:6, Rev. 1:11, 17, 18; 2:8. He is “the same yesterday, and today, and forever. but thou art the same, ch. 13:8, Ex. 3:14, Jn. 8:58. Jas. 1:17. and thy years shall not fail and thy. Ps. 90:4.”
