The Conflicts between the Kings of the South and of the North, the Ptolemies and Seleucidæ—Antiochus Epiphanes. Dan. 11:5- 45.

  1. dan. 11:36. “And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself. The willful king here, though primarily Antiochus, is antitypically and mainly Antichrist, the seventh head of the seven-headed and ten-horned beast of Rev. 13., and the “beast” of Armageddon, who gathers together thither the kings of the earth against the Lamb (Rev. 16:13, 16; 19:19). Some identify him with the revived Roman emperor the eighth head of the beast (Rev. 17:11, “The beast that was and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition”)—“the beast” (whose coadjutors are “the dragon” and “the false prophet,” who answers to the second “beast like a lamb, coming up out of the earth,” Rev. 13:11, 12)—the false Messiah of the Jews, who will “plant his tabernacle between the seas in the holy mountain,” “exalting himself above every god” (2 Thess. 2:4; “Having a mouth speaking great things … and blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, and His tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven,” Rev. 13:5, 6)…Antiochus; identifying himself with Jupiter Olympius, yet it was for that god he claimed them; still, it applies to him as the type. and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods—so ch. 7:8, 25 (“A mouth speaking great things … And he shall speak great things against the Most High”), as to the “little horn,” which seemingly identifies the two (cf. ch. 8:25, “He shall also stand up against the Prince of princes”). Antiochus forbade the worship of Jehovah by a decree “marvellous” for its wickedness: thus he was a type of Antichrist.” Fausset A. R. Dan. 7:8–20, 25, 2Thess. 2:4, Rev. 13:5; 17:3; 11:2–3.
  2. The indignation be accomplished: for it is determined-This refers to the tribulation, the wrath of God in the seals, trumpets, vials, and woes that will come upon men for their worship of the Antichrist during Daniel’s 70th week.
  3. Dan. 11:37-39. Antichrist and deities. He will disregard the true God Jn. 5:45, reject the gods the women desire- Jewish women desired to be mothers with a view to Him, the promised seed of the woman, (Gen. 30:23; Luke 1:23, 23, “Hail! thou that art highly favoured (the virgin Mary), the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women!”), reject every idol. Exalt himself above idols or gods and true God 2Thess. 2:4, Rev. 13, honor the gods of forces.
  4. “Antiochus IV as a Type of the Antichrist. Antiochus was “an insolent king” (8:23); antichrist will have an imposing look (7:20). Antiochus was a master of intrigue (8:23); the brilliance of antichrist is suggested by the “eyes” of the horn (7:8,20). Antiochus had great power (8:24); antichrist will have even greater power (11:39; 2Th 2:9; Rev 13:7-8). Antiochus was energized by Satan (8:24), just as antichrist will be empowered by Satan (2Th 2:9; Rev 13:2). Antiochus destroyed thousands (8:25); antichrist will destroy more (Rev 13:15; 16:13-16). Antiochus prospered for a short time (8:25); likewise with antichrist (11:36; Rev 13:7). Antiochus persecuted the Jews (8:24), as will antichrist (7:21,25; Rev 12:13). Antiochus was a deceiver (8:25); antichrist will be a master deceiver (2Th 2:9; Rev 13:4,14; 19:11). Antiochus was proud (8:25); antichrist will be a megalomaniac (7:8,11,20,25; Rev 13:5). Antiochus blasphemed God (8:25); as will antichrist (7:25; 11:36).
