STUDIES IN THE BOOK OF DANIEL

DANIEL’S Vision of the Ram and He-Goat continues. Dan. 8:9-14, 22-25

In our last study we said “Antiochus is a remarkable type of the Beast, the terrible “little horn” of the last days. Verses 24, 25 go beyond Antiochus and evidently refer to the “little horn” of Daniel 7. Both Antiochus and the Beast, but the Beast pre-eminently, are in view in verses 24, 25. That the “little horn” of Dan. 7. cannot be the little horn of Dan. 8:9–13, 23, is evident. The former comes up among the ten horns into which the fourth empire (Roman) is to be divided; the little horn of Dan. 8. comes out of one of the four kingdoms into which the third (Grecian) empire was divided (v. 23), and in “the latter time” of the four kingdoms (vs. 22, 23). This was historically true of Antiochus Epiphanes. They are alike in hatred of the Jews and of God, and in profaning the temple. Cf. 7:25 (the Beast) with 8:10–12 (Antiochus).” Scofield. 8 :13-14”

  3. “An insolent king” 8:23; antichrist will have an imposing look.7:20
  4. A master of intrigues 8:23; the brilliance of antichrist is suggested by the “eyes” of the horn 7:7, 20 and both are energized by Satan. Dan. 8:24, 2Thess. 2:9; Rev 13:2
  5. Had great power 8:24; antichrist will have greater power 11:39, 2Thess. 2:9, Rev. 13:7-9.
  6. They are both persecutor of the Jews, Dan. 8:24, Rev. 12:13, Dan. 7:21, 25.

  8. Antiochus was proud (8:25); antichrist will be a megalomaniac (7:8,11,20,25.
Antiochus blasphemed God (8:25); as will antichrist (7:25; 11:36).
Antiochus was not killed by human hands (8:25); the antichrist will not be either (2Th 2:8; Rev 19:19-20).

  10. He is a man Rev. 13:18; 2Thess. 2:3. at present he is unknown, he will not come on the scene until after the rapture of the Church, 2Thess. 2:7-8 and that will be after the 10 kingdoms are formed inside the old Roman Empire territory. Dan. 7:23-24, Rev. 17:9-13.

  12. The word “desolation” in the book of Daniel is spoken of seven times: (1) of the sanctuary, Dan. 8:13 was fulfilled by Antiochus 167 B.C, (2) of the sanctuary, 9:17 when the Jews were in exile in Daniel days and the sanctuary was desolate, (3) generally of the land in Daniel’s times 9:18, (4) Dan. 9:26 of the sanctuary after the ‘cutting off’ of the Messiah which was fulfilled in A.D. 70 (5) Dan. 9:27, (6) Dan. 11:31, (7) Dan. 12:11) of the sanctuary by the Beast Matt. 24:15, 2Thess. 2:3, 8-12, Rev. 13:14-15; 11:1-2 this is the abomination of desolation of the future predicted by Christ.
