THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD HOUSEHOLDER.  Matt. 13:51-53.

The parable of the good householder rounded up these series of parables here ‘possessing a beautiful unity.’ “The other group of parables given in Mathew will be found near the close of our Lord’s public ministry, in chapters 18, 20, 21, 22, and 25.” Broadus John A. In the moment, we are looking at the parable of the good householder.

  1. Matt. 13:51 “Jesus saith unto them, Have you understood all these things? They said unto him, Yea Lord.”
  2. “It is the will of Christ that all those who read and hear the word should understand. 2Tim. 2:7, Pro. 2:6; 8:14, Deut. 4:6, 1Chro. 22:12, Ps. 119:104. 
  3. The Son of God came to give us understanding. 1Jn. 5:20, Jn. 17:3, Hos. 6:3. “Ministers should proffer their services to those who have any good question to ask concerning what they have heard. It is therefore good for us, when we read or hear the word, to examine ourselves, or be examined, whether we understand it or not.” M. Henry. 2Cor. 13:5, Lam. 3:40.
  4. They answered him yes, Lord. They had not understood the parables of the Sower and the Tears; but he guided them by his interpretation. “The right understanding of one good sermon, will very much help to understand another for good truths…” M. Henry 
  5. Matt. 13:52 “Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.”
  6. “Every Scribe which is instructed” or, has been disciple Matt. 28:19. ‘to disciple’ Matt. 27:57, Act. 14:21. Disciple unto the kingdom of heaven.
  7. The Scribes held themselves as the disciples of Moses. Matt. 23”2, Jn. 9:28
  8. Christ Scribes or the Christian Scribe Matt. 23:34 has become a disciple to the Messianic Dispensation ‘instructed or disciple in respect to, for the benefit or service of the kingdom of heaven.
  9. “Is like a householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old” -Old fruits of last year’s growth and this year’s gathering. Songs of sol. 7:13.” He will add to his stores while preserving the old. Take note ‘God…Hath given you treasure in your sacks.’ Gen. 43:23
  10. The Jews Scribes gloried in teachings only of old things, but the Christian Scribe gathers out of the Old Testament. “And out of the new with ancient and modern improvements, that the man of god may be thoroughly furnished 2Tim. 3:16-17” Henry “The converse must hold, whoever does not bring forth from his treasury new things and old, is not ascribe disciple to the kingdom of heaven. Therefore we must be diligently study not only the Gospels, Epistles, and Apocalypse, but also the law and the prophets”-ORIGEN
