THE PARABLE THE HIDDEN TREASURE…2 Matt. 13:44.
Treasure hid in the field that is a cultivated land, the open country as opposed to the city. “It is common, as in the case in all unsettled countries, during war time or one who was setting off to a distance country, to bury his money, jewelry, plates and the like, in the earth. If the owner was killed in battle, or died in the far country, no one might know where the treasure were hid; and it became the usage that hidden valuables for which no owner appeared should belong to the owner of the land. The search for such treasures is alluded to in Job. 3:21, Prov. 2:4.” Broadus John A. It is common in the East ‘There are many persons digging for hid treasures all over the country, and not a few spend their last farthing in those efforts’-Thomson, ii, p.640.
- Matt. 13:44. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, and hide again, and for joy he goes and sells all that he hath, and buys that field.”
- It is true that Christ has ‘all the fullness’ Col. 1:19, Jn. 1:16, and in Him are ‘hidden the treasure of wisdom and knowledge’ Col. 2:3, however, He is not ‘hidden’ in the ‘field’.
- The ‘field’ is ‘the world’ Matt. 13:38, and not the field the Church or the gospel.
- The gospel, the Church, Christ or God’s gifts are not what can be bought. Act. 8:18-20, Is. 55:1-3. The man who was told to sell all that he has, was to give to the poor and carry his cross and follow Christ, and not to use the money to buy salvation. Matt. 19:20-22. Christ said, ‘what can a man give in exchange for his soul’, the salvation of the soul is not bought with silver or gold or any corruptible thing. 1Pet. 1:18
- The treasure is Israel. Ex. 19:5, Ps.135:4. Ephraim was lost in the field Jer. 31:5-12, 18-20, Rom. 11:28 see 26-29.
- He is to be ransomed from the powerful enemy Jer. 31:11, Is. 52:1-3 with the blood of Christ Zech 9:10-11, 1Pet. 1:18, who left all Phil. 2:6-8, Heb. 2:10, 14.
- The joy of the ransom has been spoken of by the prophets. Is. 49:13; 62:4-7; 65:18-19.
- The call to discipleship is the call to sacrifice. Lk. 9:57-60; 14:26-27. It is a life of commitment, which is willingness to do whatever it takes, it is promise to yourself from which you refuse to back down. It means, paying the dues, it disregards critics, and accepts no excuses.
- Believers are called to discipleship, while sinners are called to free salvation.
