THE PARABLE OF THE MUSTARD SEED Matt. 13:31-32, Mk. 4:30-32, Lk. 13:18-21.

This is the common mustard which is found in hot countries of the East is sometimes found eight to ten feet high. ‘Greater among herbs” it rises above its own class of plant, and become a tree. “The bird of the air lodge in the branches”.

  1. Assyrians and Babylonian Kingdoms: The extensive growth of kingdoms were represented by trees. Ez. 31:8-14, Dan. 4:10-12. The Assyrian and the Babylonian kingdoms were said to be exalted above all the trees of the field.
  2. ‘The Mustard seed’ is the word sown as in the parable of sower has produced, the children of the kingdom 1Pet. 1:23. They are entitled to the kingdom by birth Jn. 3:3-8, 1Jn. 5:1, Tit. 3:5. “These are planted in the “field”, which is the world Matt. 13:38.
  3. “The least of all seeds’. We have a God who call things ‘which be not as though they were’ Rom. 4:17, he has said he will call those are not a people His people Rom. 9:22-26. God has deliberately chose what in the world is foolish, weak, lowborn and insignificant to shame the wise. 1Cor. 1:26-29 Amp, Act. 4:11.
  4. Insignificant and “slow progress of Christianity in the world.
  5. It is slow because it is growth and not a case of manufacture.
  6. It is slow because it is in an unfriendly soil and clime, an exotic.
  7. Slow because of those who ought to tend it more carefully.

  10. A place of deliverance from the powers of darkness. Ps.91:3, Col. 1:12-13, Act.26:18

  13. A place where you are lifted far above your enemy. Ps. 91:11-13, Eph.2:5-6, Ps. 110:1-3, Eph.1:21.
  14.  Place of nourishment. Ps. 23:5, Is. 65:13-14, 21, Ps. 37:25-26, Ps. 92:12-14 where people will grow in a healthy manner, and be well, active and prosper. Ps. 1:3, 2Cor. 9:8-10, 1Thes. 3:12.
