MYSTERIES OF THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN-THE SEVEN PARABLES OF THE KINGDOM. Matt. 13:1-57

THE PARABLE OF THE TARES OF THE FIELD …1. Matt. 13:36, 24-30, 36-43

“The Jews, including our Lord’s disciples would naturally think with their rooted notions of Messiah’s reign, that he would promptly destroy all those who did not submit to his authority, as was common with Oriental conquerors.” Broadus John A. The prediction of John the Baptist about him can also be a motivator to this view Matt. 3:10-12. We can also see the views and feelings of John and James to call fire down from heaven to consume the Samaritan village, for refusing to receive Jesus Lk. 9:52-56. The Messianic discrimination is to take place at the end of the present dispensation, when the unmixed wheat will be gathered into the garner Matt. 13:30; 3:12 and not now.

  1. Matt. 13:24, 37-38. The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed into the field.”
  2. ‘Likened unto a man’ vs 24, ‘the son of man’ vs 37. The man that sowed the good seed. Matt. 8:22; 9:6, Lk. 18:8, Jn. 1:51; 5:27, Acts. 7:56, Rev. 1:13. This is no other person than the Messiah the owner of the kingdom Dan. 7:13-14.
  3. ‘The good seed’ is not the ‘word’ as in the first parable vs. 19, 23, but rather that which the word has produced 1Pet. 1:23, the children of the kingdom. They are entitled to the kingdom by birth Jn. 3:3-8, 1Jn. 5:1, Tit. 3:5. “These are providently vs 37, “sown”, that is scattered, here and there in the “field”” C. I. Scofield
  4. The field that is ‘the world’ vs 24, 38. The world has 3 meanings:
  5. Material world. Act. 17:14, Matt. 13:35, Jn. 1:10, Jn. 17:12 Mk. 16:15
  6. The inhabitants. Jn .1:10, Jn. 3:16; 12:19, Jn. 17:9-11, also the whole race of man. Jn. 14:17, 27; 15:18, Heb. 11:38.
  7. The goods endowments, riches, pleasure. 1Jn. 2:15; 3:17, Matt. 16:26, 1Cor.7:31.
  8.  Also abstract things which are spiritual & moral (immoral) 1Cor. 2:12 spirit or wisdom 3:19, fashion- 1Cor. 7:31 Lust, corruption Tit. 2:12, 2Pet. 1:4; 2:20, Jas. 1:27. The church is not part of the world , she should shun the world.
  9. The ‘world’ here is not ‘the visible church’ i.e., the totality of professed believers as early expositors have understood the parable as teaching that in ‘the church” we must have the righteous and the wicked together. The Lord’s interpretation is “the field is the world” not “the field is the church”. It is very true in any church there is likely to be members who are not true Christians, and whom it is often difficult to detect; when detected and clearly known, they should be handled scripturally. 1Cor. 5:4, Matt. 18:17, Tit. 3:10-11, 2Thess. 3:14, Rom. 16:17, 2Jn. 8-11. Evil and good cannot be allowed to coexist in the church if known and detected.
