The Lord climbs the Mount of Olives where he would look down upon the whole city, the place where he saw the city and wept over it Lk. 19:41-44. The disciples approached him privately, he had not publicly declared himself as the Messiah. The answer he gave to these questions are in tune with what the Prophets spoke concerning him, with special reference to Daniel’s prophecy of 70 weeks in Dan. 9:24-27. These studies are divided into: (a) Character of the age. Mat. 24:4-13, Lk. 21:25-28; 17:25-33, (b). Gospel of the Kingdom-Mat. 24:14. (c) Abomination of Desolation. Dan.9:27, Mat.24:15 (d) The Great Tribulations. Mat. 24:21 (15-26 (e) Sudden smiting of the Gentile world. Mat. 24:27-28. (f) Glorious appearing of the Lord-Mat. 24:29-31, Act.1:11-12, Rev.1:7, Ps.50:1-5, 2Thes.1:6-12, Rev.19:11-16.
- The question asked by the disciples Matt. 24:3, Mk. 13:3-4, Lk. 21:7. By these things, they were referring the Temple and the City. The coming of Christ as King, which to them will be the consummation and termination of the present age. The Messiah would close ‘this age’ and introduce the coming age.
- Character of the age. Mat. 24:4-13, Mk. 13:3-13, Lk. 21:7-19, 25-28; 17:25-33 It is being fulfilled and will continue until the opening of the first six seal in Rev. 6.
- False Messiahs. Matt. 24:4-5, Mk. 13:6, Lk. 21:8. Israel expected a Messiah to be a political deliverer, there was no evidence of this to be fulfilled before the destruction of the Temple in A,D. 70 and it is yet to be fulfilled in Israel till now.
- Wars, famines, earthquakes. Matt. 24:6-8, Mk. 13:7-9, Lk. 21:9-11. “ real wars and such rumours were abundant before A. D. 70, as well as often since…We read in Josephus and Tacitus of various famines and earthquakes in the Middle-East during the years preceding the destruction of Jerusalem” Broadus John A. It is still a regular occurrence in the world today.
- All these are the beginning of sorrows. Mat. 24:8, Mk. 13;7, Lk. 21:9. The beginnings of distresses, labour- pangs. The people of Israel will be the chief sufferers.
- Things directly affecting Christians- persecutions, false prophets, multiplied transgressions. Matt. 24:9-13, Mk. 13:9-13, Lk. 21:12-19.
- Persecutions started with the early disciples which was also written in Matt. 10:17-22. It was a terrible period for the Church before the destruction of Jerusalem. The Church has suffered and still suffers till today. Matt. 24:13, Lk. 21:18-19 “…in your patience ye shall win your soul”
