JESUS VISITS HIS OWN COUNTRY. Matt. 13:54-58.

The conclusion of this chapter is the visit of Jesus to his own country which is also recorded in Mk. 6:1-6. This is most likely to be the second visit, the first is recorded in Lk. 4:16-31 when he was rejected. Christ has a natural affection to his own country according to Seneca, who wrote in Latin “Patriam quisque, non quia pulchram, sed quia suam” meaning “Everyone loves his country, not because it is beautiful, but because it is his own” Hear what Paul said about his desire for the salvation of his own people Israel, in Rom. 9: 2-5; 10:1.

  1. Matt. 13:54. “And when He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where does this man get his wisdom and these mighty works?
  2. ‘His own country’ the district of Nazareth Matt. 2:23 and not Galilee in general Matt. 4:23, Jn. 4:43-45 where he gave the parables. “It is a petty and secluded town, whose inhabitants were violent and in bad repute among their neighbours” Broadus John A
  3. “Where does this man get this wisdom” “Not from Nazareth or Galilee, not from the Rabbis at Jerusalem, not from the adjoining counties of Asia, Africa or Europe, not from unaided human reflection.” They didn’t see Him as Wisdom (Christ) crying to them Prov. 8:1-7, 14-36, Is. 11:2, Lk. 2:40, 1Cor. 1:24, Col. 2:3.
  4. Matt. 13:55-56 “Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And his brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? And her his sisters, are they not with us? Where then did this man get all these things? So they were offended at him.”
  1. “Is this not the carpenter’s son?”2Kg. 12:11-12, 2Sam. 5:11, Mk. 6:3. The people knew Jesus to be the son of Joseph Matt. 1:18-21, Lk. 2:26-27.
  2. “And his brothers… and his sisters, are they not with us? His brothers and his sisters cannot mean less to the unbelieving and hostile Nazarenes than children of Mary and Joseph. His brother did not believe him Jn. 7:5, until after the resurrection when he appeared to James 1Cor. 15:7, the brother Gal. 1:19, they were all present at the upper room Act. 1:14.
  3. “Where then did this man get these things? The wisdom that surpassed Solomon Matt. 12:42. He was a teacher from God Jn. 3:1-3, God’s only son.
  4. They were offended in Him. They stumble, found him as obstacle to believing.
  1. The humble background. His birth among the sheep Lk. 2;6-8, the poverty of his family Lk. 2:22-24. Lack of training in the Rabbinical school
  2. “Because of their unbelief” Unbelief caused the fall of man, Jews rejection
