Key: Dan.4:17, 25; Ps. 22:28

The Conflicts between the Kings of the South and of the North, the Ptolemies and Seleucidæ—Antiochus Epiphanes. Dan. 11:5- 45.

  1. Dan. 11:40 “The “time of the end” in Daniel. The expression, or its equivalent, “in the end,” occurs, Dan. 8:17–19; 9:26; 11:35, 40, 45; 12:4, 6, 9. Summary: (1) The time of the end in Daniel begins with the violation by “the prince that shall come” (i.e. “little horn,” “man of sin,” “Beast”) of his covenant with the Jews for the restoration of the temple and sacrifice (Dan. 9:27), and his presentation of himself as God (Dan. 9:27; 11:36–38; Mt. 24:15; 2Thes. 2:4; Rev. 13:4–6), and ends with his destruction by the appearing of the Lord in glory (2Thes. 2:8; Rev. 19:19, 20). (2) The duration of the “time of the end” is three- and one-half years, coinciding with the last half of the seventieth week of Daniel (Dan. 7:25; 12:7; Rev. 13:5). (3) This “time of the end” is the “time of Jacob’s trouble” (Jer. 30:7); “a time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation” (Dan. 12:1); “great tribulation such as was not from the beginning of the world … nor ever shall be” (Mt. 24:21). The N.T., especially the Book of the Revelation, adds many details” C. I. Scofield
  2. And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind. The difficulty of reconciling this with Antiochus’s history is, no historian but Porphyry mentions an expedition of his into Egypt towards the close of his reign. This v. 40, therefore, may be a recapitulation, summing up the facts of the first expedition to Egypt (b.c. 171, 170), as already described in vv. 22, 25, and 41.” Fausset A. R. “The above quotation refers to the little horn or Antichrist coming out of the 10 horns of revived Rome, and after them to get power over them in the first half (31/2) of Daniel 70th week. He subdued 3 of them (7:23-24). The others submits to him without further struggle (Rev. 17:12-17) he becomes their leader.” Dake F. J.
  3. Dan. 11:41 “He shall enter also into the glorious land … but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. Antiochus, according to Porphyry, marching against Ptolemy, though he turned from his course to wreak his wrath on the Jews, did not meddle with Edom, Moab, and Ammon, on the side of Judea. In 1 Macc. 4:61; 5:3, &c., it is stated that he used their help in crushing the Jews, of whom they were the ancient enemies: on account of which Judas Maccabeus punished them with ‘a great overthrow.’ Cf. Isa. 11:14 as to Israel’s future retribution, just as, in the primary fulfilment of the prophecy, the Maccabees made war on them as the friends of Antiochus, (1 Macc. 5” Fausset A. R. The Antichrist will enter the land of Israel and take over many countries of revived other Rome.
  4. Dan. 11:45 he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas—between the Dead Sea and the Mediterranean. tabernacles of … palace. “His capital will be between the Dead Sea and the Mediterranean Sea in the glorious holy mountain. Mount Moriah? Dake F. J.
  5. He shall come to his end, and none shall help him; God shall cut him off in the midst of his days and none shall be able to prevent his fall. This is the same with that which was foretold ch. 8:25 (He shall be broken without hand), where we took a view of his miserable end. This will be at Armageddon. Rev. 19:19-21
