Daniel’s Confession and Prayer for Jerusalem—Gabriel Comforts him by the Prophecy of the Seventy Weeks. Dan. 9:1-27 continues.
Text: Dan. 9:26-27
The determined wrath of God upon the desolator continues. Dan. 9:27
- The last three trumpets are grouped together and are described as three “woes” upon the earth, emphasizing God’s judgment upon humankind.
- Rev. 9:1 “…I saw a star fall from heaven to the earth; and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.” When stars, these are angels, Job. 38:7 even satanic angels are called stars Rev. 12:4. However, he will descend from heaven and will be trusted with the key of the bottomless pit, and the demons there have a named head. It must be the angel that has the key of the bottomless pit. Rev. 20:1
- Rev. 9:2. The bottomless pit is the pit of the abyss Lk. 8:26-31, Rev. 17:8; 20:1-10. Is also for fallen angels and demons. Job. 26:5-6. Smoke is fire within. “The whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and burning…” Deut. 29:23 See Rev. 18:8-9. The name of the head of the place is “Abaddon” Pro. 15:11; 27:20, Job. 26:6, “Apollyon” is the name of leader. It means destroyer Jer. 4:7; 6:26, Is. 16:4.
- Rev. 9:3-11. “And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth…”
- These are not ordinary locust, they will not eat grass, vegetables or trees v 4. They have a leader v 4-6, 11 ordinary locust have no king Pro. 30:27, they are indestructible by mortal men; for ordinary locust, see Ex. 10:3-20 and Joel. 1:4; 2:25.
- They have bodies like horses, heads like men with crown of gold v 7, and hair like women, teeth like lions v 8. Others are, breastplate of iron, wings, tails and scorpion stings v 9.
- A king rules them and commands them not to hurt the grass, green things, trees and 144,000 Jews. God always preserves His people 2Pet. 2:6-9. They are rather to hurt all men for five months v 5-10 but not to kill them.
- Rev. 9:13-16. The sixth trumpet. “…I had a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God” In the tabernacle, the blood of sin offerings is put on the horns of the golden altar Lev. 16:18. This is now Christ blood on the horns of the same altar Ps. 118:27, this is definitely The Lamb’s (Christ) voice and not the voice of the martyrs of Rev. 6:9-11 not that of the angel whose actions led in the trumpet judgment.
- The four angels bound in the great river Euphrates are slayers the leader of the 200,000,000 demon horsemen who are bound in abyss, each of them will command 50,000,000 and will go in four directions to slay the third of men. This river is associated with the tribulation judgment Rev. 16:13-16, Jer. 46:4-10.
- Rev. 9:16-21. Those who sat on the horses have the breastplates fire (red), jacinth (yellow) and brimstone (sulphur). The heads of the horses as the head of lions and out of their mouths issued fire, and smoke and brimstone.
- Three ways by which they kill a third of men (v.18). Fire burns, smoke suffocates, and brimstone (sulphur) stinks. All three belongs to the lake of fire. Rev. 19:3; 21:8.
- Their power (v. 10).
- Their mouth, their tails.
- Their tails were like serpents.
- They had heads and with which they hurt.
- It should be noted that the killing is not done by the horsemen but by the horses. Out of the mouth of the horses come out forth fire, smoke and brimstone with which they kill one third of men.
